12/10/10 MHHS 69 AC Reynolds 66
In a rematch of one week ago the Cougars traveled to AC Reynolds to take on the 4a Rockets. A lot of hype and anticipation surrounded the game as senior center John Cannon was within 4 blocks of setting the NCHSAA career blocks record.
Cannon came out strong early scoring 11 first quarter points as the cougars led 17-13 at the end of the first quarter. Foul trouble plagued MHs big men as Tyson Tomberlin and John Cannon had to sit the bench in the 2nd quarter. Junior Eli Buckner scored 8 of his 10 to keep the rockets at bay as Heritage led at the half 34-30. Heritage extended their lead in the third quarter as sharpshooters Alex Biggerstaff, Drew Letterman and Spencer Bishop lit up the rockets zone hitting 5 threes. The third quarter ended MH 57-AC 49.
Reynolds fought back cutting the Cougar lead down several times to within 1 possession. The "dynamic duo" of Biggerstaff and Cannon once again answered the challenge. Cannon knocked down one clutch three and three free throws. Also, he broke the block record and as AC launched a potential game tying field goal with 1.5 to go in the game he blocked that attempt as well, déjà vu as would have it.
Stats:
John Cannon 19 points, 12 rebounds, 5 blocks and became the 1st player ever in MHHS athletic history to own a NCHSAA record passing Eric Hicks of Dudley. Currently John has 437 blocks.
Alex Biggerstaff 17 points, 7 rebounds.
Eli Buckner 10 points
Trenton Burleson 5 points and 5 assists, 2 drawn charges
Drew Letterman 7 points and 5 assists
Tyson Tomberlin 3 points and 5 rebounds
Spencer Bishop 6 points
Drew Hoilman 2 points, 1 drawn charge
Xander Silvers 1 drawn charge
