Cougars lose final game of 2011 at Madison knocked out of playoffs! 46-6




With playoffs on the line for both teams in 2011
Madison and Heritage on a a cold rainy night, came into the game with a lot to play for. Heritage had lost 4 starters in last weeks loss to Avery. Well as far as injuries this game was worse QB Sam Howell was helped off the field after a late hit tore his fibula . Clayton Brock Broke his foot on the first drive of the game for Madison . Ian Boone out with shoulder . Jackson Young replacement "BIG BROTHER" Ben Rice was lost on a late hit out of bounds  that hurt his sternum . Lineman Trey Wilson and Cody McFarland both were limping noticeably .Louis Romero was throwed out for excessive celebration on a called back TD when he leaped from 5 yards out. Caleb Young suffered from a concussion in the second these are the ones I seen . I'm sure there was more, I'm sorry if I missed anyone.



Cougars fumbled 5 times losing 4 all resulting in scores Madison put up 40 unanswered Pt's. Backup qb's Trevor Robinson and Justin "sunshine " hoilman couldn't move the banged  up cougar O line. Lucas King scored the only Pt's for Heritage on a pass from Trevor in  the 4th extra pt no good . Team as a whole only rushed for 90 yards Austin Rice had 48 yards on 16 carries. QB Sam Howell 32 yards on 5 carries before leaving the game with the injured foot. Cougars had over 200 penalty yards. Compared to Madison's 175 yards. Madison beat cougars on this night 45-6 Cougars finish season 4-6 miss playoffs first time since 2007.  Thank you seniors for allowing me to show up on your sidelines this fall it was fun, good luck!

Mountain Heritage at Avery 39-49 loss




Cougars and Vikings both entered the game at 4-4 and  both trying to finish in 4th place in the conference . Cougars started off fast (check videos) on they're first drive Cougars ran down the Vikings Defense on a 7 min. Drive finished off by QB Sam Howell . Cougars went up 6-0 on the young Viking D. First drive for Avery, Alex Villanueva passed the vikings inside the 5 and ran a bootleg on 4th down and scored 7-6 Avery .Cougars took the ball again and drove right back down the field, Howell ran it in from 25 yards. Cougars up 13-7. Avery came right back' scoring on Tennessee transfer Luke Childress . Avery up 14-13. Cougars Jackson young and Sam Howell both where shook up in the 2nd . Howell returned after on play.Jackson did not after a bad concussion. Jackson was having a great night rushing only 2 times for 47 yards. Villanueva passed the vikings to the Cougars 30. Then Luke Childress ran in from 30. Avery up 21-13. Cougars Drew Hoilman Returned the kick off to the 44 yard line. But was hit on the sideline and was lost with a possible broken foot. Cougars came down the field running with Howell and Rice then the Cougars scored on a pass play from 20 plus yards to Eli Buckner on a layout grab in the back of the End zone. Eli was shaken up on the play. Howell ran in on the 2pt Conversion. 21 all. On the kick off the Cougars kicked the ball inside the Viking 10 yard line.But the Viking returner thinking the ball would  bounce out of bounds didn't pick up the ball. Cougars Lucas King hustled down the field and recovered the kickoff before the half! Cougars Austin Rice scored on 3rd down .Going up 27-21 .Avery had under a Min. before the half. Villanueva threw an int to Eli Buckner who came down hard on his shoulder and did not return. Buckner had 76 total yards and 1 TD. Halftime. 2nd half Vikings start running on all cylinders Avery's QB ran  for 210 yards rushed a 70 yard touchdown . Vikings up 28-27. Cougars got the ball back drove down the field scored with Austin Rice from the goal line.28-33 Cougars. Rice had 2 TD'S 108 yards rushing Austin carried the ball 25 times in the game. Heritage then tried an onside kick that was recovered buy Avery.Villanueva who had 216yards passing picked the cougars apart with out Buckner and Jackson and Young. It was easy pickings.Alex hooked again with Dustin Clark from 20 yards out! Avery up 35-33. Vikings . Cougars penalty's killed everything they tried to do. Cougars compiled over 133 yards in fouls Avery had 71 on 9 penalty's .But the punt on the next possession of the Cougars . Alex wasted no time to score when he hooked up with basketball star on a go route 50 yards for the Score. 42-27 Vikings . Cougars couldn't move the ball Vikings took the ball back down the field Alex scored from 5 yards out. Avery has the rout on 49-33 in the fourth. QB Sam Howell aka "the warrior " brought Heritage back down the field on a time consuming drive scoring on 2nd down to Jr Lucas King on a 16 yard pass play.Howell finished with 205 total yards and 2 TD'S Cougars finished off the scoring on that play Final 49-39 Avery! Cougars had 460 total yards ,Vikings had 416 yards.

Mitchell at the PIT! Cougars comeback falls short 28-31

THANK YOU ALL SENIORS WHO HAVE  PLAYED THEY'RE FINAL GAME AT THE PIT!


Mitchell came to the PIT! Looking to end a the longest losing streak to Mountain Heritage in the teams history. Mountaineers has not beat Mountain Heritage since 2006 . These where two different teams for the first time Mitchell was the heavy favorite.
But to start the game a picture perfect drive lead by QB Sam Howell marched the Cougars down the field where the cougars Austin Rice punched it in from one yard out (see videos). Cougars ate up 8 Min's in the first drive. 7-0
Mitchell's Justin Hughes wasted no time answering the Cougars "JUGGY" scored on a 35 yard run on a 5 play scoring drive.7-7
After that it was all Mitchell in the first half the Mitchell Defense was all over Austin Rice making it know that the Cougars would have to beat them with someone else. Mitchell Linebacker's keyed on the ALL CONFERENCE LB RB all night.
Cougars fell behind Mitchell on the Mountaineer's next drive as Hughes run in again from 10 yards
Mitchell up 14-7
Cougars still trying the to find there rhyme like in the first drive went 3 and out again.
Mitchell's Troy Self avg 6 yards a carry and 58 total yards punched the Mounties inside Cougar territory again. "Juggy" Justin Hughes was being a nightmare at this point putting the Mountaineers inside the 5 then in the end zone. 21-7 Mitchell

Mountain Heritage got the ball back around 4 Min's was unable to get the the ball past mid field
tried a fake punt with Sam Howell that was sniffed out by Mitchell. Mitchell was in business again but was unable to get in the end zone after getting inside the 10 . Hit a Micheal Styles field goal.

Cougars looked to be done. But 3 sports star Eli "HE LIED" Buckner had other Idea's Buckner returned the kick all the way to the Mitchell 40 yard line. Cougars had only time for one play before the half. They tried a Halfback Pass from Lucas King. That was picked off at the 15 and run back to around the 45 to end the half.

(At the Half pranksters from Mitchell Brought a laugh out of the crowd when one dressed as a banana and one chasing him dressed as a gorilla ran across the field) .








 long time Yancey photographer David Philips was honored for his years of support of the cougars. Before losing his battle with cancer in the spring. Cougar Touchdown Club gave the award to his wife.
In the second half the Cougars woke up The Cougars D stopped Mitchell 3 and out . Mountain Heritage Sam Howell "THE WARRIOR" put his team on his shoulders with Rice being keyed on. Howell took over a 40 yard run to the Mitchell 20 then Austin Rice knocked down the door on a 2 yard run making the score 24-14.
Rice had 55 yards rushing on 19 carries and 2 TD's
Cougars held Mitchell again on they're next drive forcing the Mountaineers to punt again.
Eli Buckner and Jackson Young pushed the cougars down the field Jackson had 18 yards on 6 carries fighting a nagging ankle injury.
The Cougars got to the goal line  and went for it on 4th down.
Howell passed to the back of the end zone to Eli Buckner for the score.

Mitchell faced 3rd down on they're next drive Hughes threw the ball down the field to RB Troy Self  Ian Boone had the coverage had the Coverage on the sidelines and intercepted Hughes on the 12 yard line of Heritage. But a flag thrown by the referee across the field called pass interference on Boone and a first down for Mountaineer's. (This play will be argued for years). Mitchell fans saying it was good call and Mountain Heritage saying it was terrible.
On any count it woke Mitchell back up giving them an easy score with Hughes on a 15 yard run.
Mitchell up 31-21
Hughes had 153 yards rushing and 60 passing on the night.
Cougars had a new enemy the clock!
Mountain Heritage had a time consuming drive inside the 15 but a personal foul on Austin Rice when he got tangled up with Micheal Styles on the sideline.
On 4th down the Cougars Sam Howell threw a bullet to Eli Buckner in the corner of the end zone.

Buckner had his best game ever with 51 total yards and 2 TD's
Sam Howell was a beast all night
Rushing  23 times for 218 yards and going 2-4 passing for 20 yards and 2 TD's
Cougars tried the onside kick but Mitchell ran out the clock.
Heritage out gained Mitchell 342 yards to 268
But the Cougars had double the pen. yards with 66 to 36
plus the big Pass Interference call .
After the game tempers flared as words where said on both sides and some small fights broke out on the the cougar sideline until cooler heads prevailed.

Mountain Heritage vs Thomas Jefferson at (THE HORSE SHOE)! 54-21 WIN



Thomas Jefferson's homecoming was Friday night. But the best Homecoming dish the officials could give the Griffins was calling the Cougars for 222 penalty yards and 2 scores called back even an 80 yard touchdown called back by Jackson Young on a illegal hit (check video). Cougars got in twice on the first drive but the first one was called back. QB Sam Howell scored from 3 yards out on the cougars opening drive. Howell had 109 yards rushing on 11 carries going 1-3 passing for 15 yards. Eli Buckner Scored on a 4 yard run on they re next possession Buckner had  74 total yards and 1 TD and 1 int.  Cougars Jackson young scored from 27 yards putting the cougars up 21-0. Jackson 62 yards on 10 carries one score.Jackson left game with ankle injury. Cougars lead at the half 21-0. Thomas Jefferson's passing attack woke up the next drive driving the griffins down to the 2 then Tyler Rodriguez scored on a short pass from QB Martin. Score 21-7. Cougars Louis Romero capped of the Cougars drive from 5 yards Romero had 25 yards on 3 carries one TD. Cougars lead 28-7. Cougars Austin Rice had a monster night rushing for 225yards on 15 carries avg 15 yards a carry. Scored from inside the 10 . Cougars lead 35-7.Cougars varsity did they re job . So the 4th quarter belonged to JV (THE CUBS). Colby Presnell off the JV intercepted QB martin on the cougars 40 yard line where he ran it back to the 15 of the Griffins(presnell had 21 yards on 4 carries). QB Justin Holiman Punched it in on 4th down. Cougars up 41-7. Thomas Jefferson fumbled on the next drive and Dalton Robinson scored inside the 10. Score 47-7. Thomas Jefferson scored on they're next drive from a 40 plus yard run from QB Tyler Martin. Score 47-14. Cougars next drive The "THE HIT MAN" Ben Rice run 56 yards to the end zone. Making the score 54-14. But the Griffins took back the kickoff 90 yards to cap off all scoring . Final score 54-21.

OWEN AT MOUNTAIN HERITAGE "THE PIT" 30-27 COMEBACK WIN!

COUGARS WELCOMED THE OWEN WARHORSES TO THE PIT!




Owen got they're season back on track by beating 1a power Mitchell the week before. The Cougars season was in panic mode after losing 2 straight against hendersonville and Polk. Warhorses came out in a power running game with Travis Frizwell and  Jordan Little JON! Warhorses drove to the 15 yard line of the cougars on they re opening drive. The Cougars D for the first put Ol Cody McFarland Defense help with the pass rush  Cougars finally stopped the Warhorse's inside the 15 yard line. But Owen was able to hit a field to make the score 3-0. Cougars could not move the ball the entire 1st period. Owen drove deep inside  cougar territory in the being of the 2nd quarter with a lot of running Little Jon. Jordon punched it in from 2 yards out putting the warhorses up 10-0.  Mountain Heritage had to punt again but DB Seth Macintosh intercepted Owens Carl Patton. Macintosh returned the int to the warhorse 24. From there Sam Howell ran it in from 20 yards bringing the score to 10-7. Heritage D held strong but a pass interference call on Lucas king (check videos) prolonged the warhorse drive as head coach Joey Robinson disagreed strongly . That soon set up a incredible run by Jordon Little Jon shed 4 tacklers from 20 yards out into the end zone(check videos). Warhorses up 17-7 . Cougars Austin Rice started warming up rushing the cougars to the 17 yard line. But penalties killed the drive but kicker Israel magana bailed the cougars out from 35 yards out making the score 17-10.  Owen wasted no time answering Heritage. Full back Travis Frizwell who had 80 yards rushing pushed Owen deep inside Heritage territory when Warhorse Cole Leighton scored from 19 yards out   making the score 24-10 in the 3rd. Cougars went to the air on the next drive but Howell had to force the ball early and it was intercepted. Owen had the ball on the on the 35 and picked up another 20 passing with Carl Patton going 4-14 on 87 yards passing. Looking to put the game out of reach but the Cougars defense stopped the Warhorses forcing them to hit a field goal. Owen looked to have the game out of reach at 27-10 in the fourth quarter . As the rain came down and fans gave up on any sort of Cougar comeback fans made they're way to the exit gates. Cougars drove down the field but fumbled inside the 40. All was lost but Owen then fumbled 3 plays later. Cougars looked at Rb Jackson young on the drive Jackson had 35 yards on 9 carries and scored on the drive from one yard out extra point was missed. Score 27-16! Cougars then converted the onside try . Austin Rice was a man on a mission in the 4th willing the cougars down the field along with Louis Romero who had 22 yards on 2 carries to get the cougars inside the 5. Where Sam Howell scored and Austin Rice got the 2 point conversion after 2 penalties on the Warhorses put the ball on the one. Cougars now down just 27-24. Get a second onside kick under 4 minutes. Cougars drove inside the 30 but a big hit on Rb Jackson Young knocked the ball out and Owen recovered. The game looked over but the Warhorses where forced to punt the ball with under 2 Min's. Owen pinned the cougars on the 11 yard forcing the cougars to go 89 yards for a go head score. Austin Rice on first down ran to the 47 yard line Austin had 185 yards on 18 carries with a 10 yard plus avg. a rush! Sam Howell told his line before they took the field we will score on the this drive . On the 2nd play Howell ran off the right side just like Rice did and took the ball in the end zone.Howell ran for 120 yards on 15 carries and 3 Tds. Capping the Cougar comeback was Sam Macintosh intercepted Owens Carl Patton. The largest 4th quarter in they re history. Both teams had over 100 yards in penalties . Cougars rushed for over 363 yards, 2-8 for 23 yards(both passes to Eli Buckner).Owen rushed for 241 and 3-9 passing for 39 yards. After the game Rb Jackson Young said "Looks like we found out who we are"!
