Lady cougars Great season ends vs East Burke 62-53

One of the Greastest season's in the Susie shelton era ended Friday night in front of a huge crowd of supporters Friday night.





 After Maria Kardulis hit any opening 3 for the Cougars (Maria finished with 5 pts 3 rebounds 2 steals 2 assist) Lady Cougars found they're self in a hole after that as East Burke shooters hit 3's early Cougars  down 15-6 in the first. Susie Shelton used a timeout to regroup. After the first period the Cougars down 17-6.  Cougars responded, Brianna Woody got started inside Brianna had 15 pts 5 rebounds 1 steal on the night . Destiny Elkins Had 4 rebounds to help inside as the Cougars went on a 7-0 run. Samm Chandler  only made 3 shots from the field, made 6 important off the foul line. Samm had 12pt's 10 rebounds a block, and 3 steals. East Burke 26 Cougars 25 end of half.




Cougars had the lead for less than 2 mins in the 2nd half when they went up 32-31 in the 3rd.  But the physical style of the Cavaliers took a toll on the Cougars. Cougars down 43-36 by the end of the third. Cougars inside game changed as Woody ,Ray, Freeman Elkins all got in foul trouble. The Cougars stepped up with Kaylon Johnson hit 2 cultch 3's in the 2nd half Giving her 10pts, Nyssa Freeman( had 7 points ) with a big 3 late to pull the Cougars to 53-56. Down late the and forced to foul ,Brianna and Freeman fouled out . East Burke made they're shots on the line. Cavs pull away in final minute winning 62-53. East Burke 20-9 will play Wilkes Central 28-1 (a 70-49 home winner over Pisgah), Friday at UNC Greensboro . Maria Kardulis and Summer Ray both seniors have played they're final games for cougar basketball.

Cougars season ends vs Mustangs 2nd round

Cougars came in 17-9 and big underdawgs to the 18-3 Smoky Mountain Mustangs.


 Mustangs jumped the Cougars early taking a 24 to 12 lead after one. The Mustangs leader Will Carpenter had 26 was a cougar killer. Seniors Alex Biggerstaff and Eli Buckner turned they're game up to avoid a blowout. Alex had 22 Eli 20 for the game. Cougars only trailed 37-45 at the half after out scoring the Mustangs by 4 in the 2nd. Spencer Bishop's Last senior game seen him drop 13 pts. The 4th senior on the team had a bucket in his final game Brain Krause. Drew Hoilman, Zach Brown, Brandon Buchanan also had a duece. Smokey led after the 3rd  Tanner Cogdill's 17pt's helped in a 30 pt explosion in the 3rd doomed the cougars . Austin Taylor had 6pts not the big game he would have liked  to have had to finished out the year.

2nd round lady Cougars bounce East Rutherford from playoff

#1  Lady Cougar's played host to the East Rutherford Cav's.Cougars jumped out early 19-13 in the 1st period . But the Cav's decided to lock down the paint to hold Brianna Woody and Samm Chandler out of the game. This left the guards wide open and player of the game Nyssa Freeman made them pay Nyssa hit 6 3's on the night tying a school record .East got the lead down to 29-24 behind Rachel camp who scored 26 Pt's on the night . Nyssa hit 4 3's in a row for the cougars . Nyssa had 20 Pt's on the night. Kaylon Johnson also hit 2 3's finishing with 12pts. Brianna had 6 to get the cougars out to a 39-29 with a bucket just as time expired at the half. Off the bench young Destiny Elkin's had 8 Pt's. East then went to throwing everything up trying to close the gap. East's guard Miller had 2 3's finishing with 12 Pt's
But East Rutherford began to wear down in the third. Cougars led by 15. Samm chandler softly had 21 Pt's . Girls shot 48 percent while The Cav's missed hurried shots in the second half only going 34 percent.Cougars roll.

1st round of state playoffs Cougars get payback on Polk.

Last time these two played Polk came back from double digits to beat the Cougars .





 This time  Cougars came in as a #5 seed at home and look for payback. Eli Buckner was 8-8 off the line combined with Alex Biggerstaffs 7-7 they shot 100% from the stripe . Biggerstaff hit 3 of 3 from three. Buckner had 11 pts 14 rebounds Alex 26 pt's 5 assist. One assist went to Drew Hoilman who had 4 pt's 2 rebounds. Cougars after the 1st period up 17-14  . Spencer Bishop had 10 pt's going 6-8 from the line with 4 rebounds 4 steals . Polk is a good team but shot under 30percent which Heritage only shot 20-53 with 5 being 3's . Austin Taylor missed a monster dunk in the 4th .Taylor had only 6pts  but 13 rebounds a forced charge 3 blocks in the 1st half ,5 blocks for the game and 2 assist. Cougar's shot a season high 22-25 from the line. Another big stat of the game, Cougars grabbed 32 defensive rebounds 43 rebounds total.Cougars blow out polk in 2nd half winning

Lady Cougars send warriors home in 1st round of state tourney 75-43

Lady Cougars came in to the State Tourney as a #1 . With home court advantage through out the playoffs. Warriors found them self down 21-10 after the 1st period .

 Maria Kardulis hit her first 4 shots finishing with 14pts 4 rebounds 3 assist. Kaylon Johnson had 7 pts with 5 assist.The hot shooting continued in the 2nd with Destiney Elkins . The Freshman had 9pts 7 rebounds Abby Bailey also had 4 pt's 3 rebounds on the night. Cougars lead by 15 at the half. Nyssa Freeman hit one 3 on the night giving her 5pts 7 rebounds 3 steals. Nyssa and Summer Ray had 5 assist summer hit two baskets on the night. Ladys up 54-32 after the 3rd. The two girls inside Woody and Chandler finished off the warriors . Brianna had 10pt's 3 rebounds and a assist. Samm Chandler was the leading scorer with 18 pt's 9rebounds 2 steals 2 blocks 2 assist as the
cougars cruise to a 75-43 win.

Varsity boys finish 2nd in WHC Tourney

1ST ROUND VS MADISON
Cougars where beat Madison twice earlier in the year. But was tested a little more the 3rd time around. Alex Biggerstaff was hot with 22pts but so was Madison's Daniel Nash with 17pts . Madison trailed 28-34 after 3 . Eli Buckner's 13pts and Austin Taylor's 5 Pt's gave cougars some breathing room. Spencer Bishop 7 Pt's helped to put the Madison Patriots away.

2nd ROUND VS MITCHELL
Cougars split season series with #2 seed Mitchell Mountaineers. Cougars led early is the game with Spencer Bishop busting a 2 3s early getting a out to a 9 point lead early  finishing with 21 Pt's 4 rebounds. Alex Biggerstaff hit 2 3s also to give him 17pts 5 rebounds . Mitchell battled back tying the game at 22 all at the half.
The second half the Cougars and mountaineers both shot around 30 percent Eli Buckner had 10 Pt's for the game  with Austin Taylor's 6 Pt's and 5 blocks. Cougars had 8 blocks as a team and 6 steals. But what doomed Mitchell was Mountain Heritage going 30-38 off the line . Both Taylor and and Buckner was 4-4 and Bishop was 11-15 Biggerstaff 7-8  Hensley 3-6 Brandon Brown 1-2.

WHC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME
Cougars took on the undefeated #1 SEED Hendersonville Bearcats .Cougars lost both previous meeting by double digits. This game would be no different .Hendersonville is #1 team for a reason going up 22-12 in the first. Cougars shot 37 percent . Alex Biggerstaff led all cougars with 16 Pt's with Austin Taylor had 7 rebounds Taylor had 4 Pt's. Tim Hensley had 8 Pt's 6 rebounds. Cougars Trailed 43-24 at the half. Lucas King and both 3's .King finished 5pt's 5 rebounds . Spencer Bishop led everybody with 2 3's getting 9pt's . Eli Buckner's 5pt's was his tournament low but he had 9 rebounds 3 assist. In the end to much Bearcats basketball.

Mountain Heritage girls win whc tourney

1st round vs Thomas Jefferson
Mountain heritage girls were unstoppable in the 3 games at Polk county high. Tuesday night in a 1st round match up the #1 seed girls walked over the lonely the 1 win Thomas Jefferson Griffins. Kaylon Johnson was back to her self with 13 Pt's  Nyssa Freeman's 7 and Destiny elkins 6 off off the bench helped the cougars get out early. The griffins could not score through or stop Brianna Woody who had 18pts .  Cougars cruised to a 20 pt lead and won easliy 55-26


2nd round vs Owen
Owen lost both games with the Cougars earlier in the year ,But gave good contests . This time Lady Cougars took it to the warhorses. Kaylon Johnson had 20 Pt's (3 three pointers) 5 rebounds 2 steals .Maria Kardulis hit a 3 finished with 9 Pt's 5 rebounds 1 charge. Brianna woody had 7 pts7 rebounds 5 assist which led everyone. Summer Ray had her first game back since a knee injury finished with 3 Pt's . Nyssa Freeman had 4 Pt's . Samm chandlers 6 rebounds helped the Cougars put the game away winning easy 48-26

3rd Round vs Madison
Championship game
Madison upset the only team in the whc to beat the lady cougars this season Avery Thursday night to get to the championship. Mountain Heritage problems with the Patriots in the last game of the season. But not this time .
Cougars hot shooting stunned the patriots . Maria Kardulis burnt up Madison her 15 Pt's 5 rebounds with Kaylon Johnson's 10pts and summer rays 3 points got the cougars out by 20 early then leading 32-9 at end of the first half. Brianna woody led the team with 17pt's also 3 rebounds 1 block. Sam chandler only hit one basket from the floor but made a living off the line with 7 Pt's also having a block. Nyssa freeman and Destiny Elkins had 5 Pt's . Destiny's 8 rebounds led both teams. Cougars cruised to a 65-45 win.
Brianna woody was named Tourney MVP!
Lady Varsity team have won more games in the regular season than any other LADY Cougar team before finishing with 23 wins 2 losses.

lady cougars get past Madison 55-47


Lady Cougars had already won the Western Highlands Conference and a # 1st round bye in the Western Highlands Tourney.
 Madison came in hot outscoring the cougars 11-6 after one . Brianna Woody lead the cougars inside with 11 Pt's Samm Chandler had 10pts. Madisons Allie Leake had 13 Pt's had a good game the first half . But the Cougars Nyssa Freeman lead all cougars with 13pts with some big 3's to pull the cougars out to a 19-23 lead at the half. Madison fought back hard with Cheyenne Bunner who had Bunner's 12pt's went on a 6-0 run in the 3rd . Destiny Elkin's  lead everyone with 9 Pt's off the bench. As the cougars took a 41-32 at the end of the fourth. Cougars also lead a balanced attack in the game to finish off Madison with Abby Renfro, Maria Kardulis,Kaylon Johnson all had 4 point's to put the lady patriots away. Lady cougars finish season 20-2 beating Madison 55-47. Cougars enter the Conference Tournament as the #1 seed Next Tuesday.

Varsity boys thump Madison again.69-49


Senior Night Varsity men's team realized this might be the last time they may play in THE DEN again.
 Seniors Alex Biggerstaff and Spencer Bishop came out hot  hitting 3's outscoring Madison  18-9 in the first period  Alex Biggerstaff lead everyone with 23 points. Spencer followed with 13 points. Another Senior Eli Buckner got his season avg again 13 points . Cougars lead 32-20 at the Half. Cougars out scored Madison 21-12 in the 3rd. Thanks to Brandon Brown and Austin Taylor both had 6 Pt's. Tim Hensley and Lucas King both a had big defensive night Tim had 2pts,King with 1 pt. Brandon Buchanan 4 Pt's and Brian Krause's 2 Pt's  finished out the Cougar blow out. Cougars win 69-49

Lady Cougars win WHC TITLE against Avery 54-45

Lady Cougars had a chance to at least get a share of the Conference title with a win against Avery . Avery was cold under the pressure Cougars took Advantage going up 11-0  to start the game. Nyssa Freeman hit 2 3's  and had 2 rebounds. Maria Kardulis  had 8 Pt's her 5 steals and 5 Assist lead everyone. Cougars lead 13-4 after one. Samm chandler had 11 rebounds 6pts 2 assist . Lady Cougars killed Avery on the glass. Brianna Woody had a monster game with 21pts 12 rebounds 4 steals . Lady cougars lead 30-20 at the half.  Avery got the game down to 4 but Kaylon Johnson's 8pts 3 rebounds 4 assist and a steal  and Destiny Elkins 2 Pt's 3 rebounds 1 steal and the games only block . Helped the cougars to a 45-34 lead beginning of the 4th. Lady Vikings had 2 players in double digits but could not come up with a answer against a team that refused to lose. Abby bailey and Abby renfro both had 2pts and 3 rebounds. Cougars never trailed had 38 rebounds as a team and 12 steals . With Mitchell losing to Madison the Cougars clinched the WHC TITLE.

Avery came into Mtn. Heritage with only 7 players
Mtn. Heritage fresh off the Mitchell loss Needed a win. Cougars went up early with Austin Taylor inside . Taylor was effective early with 4 blocks 10 rebounds 8 Pt's. Tim Hensley was every where with 10pts 7 rebounds 2 steals a charge 2 assist even a block against Avery's Tim Stewart. Cougars up 13-5 after 1st period. Eli Buckner had 13 Pt's with 2 3s 9 rebounds  and Spencer Bishop had 6 Pt's 3 assist.
But Avery played hard with the Cougars hits some big 3's and a big shot at the buzzer to make the score 29-30 at the half.
Alex Biggerstaff had 14pts to lead all scorers his 10 rebounds matched Taylor and his  4 assist lead the team. Brandon Brown hit a big 3 ,Lucas king had 5pts. Cougars outscored Vikings but  only up by 4 in the 3rd.
But Avery finally wore out in the up temp game. Cougars outscored The vikings in the 4th by 10 in the 4th .Drew Hoilman had 2pts but 5 rebounds Zack Brown had 2 Pt's off a nice layup.

Boys Lose BIG LEAD in Ledger fall 55-52



Both teams started out cold in this game but Mitchell was at the North pole in the first period. Mitchell only scored 4 Pt's in the 1st. Cougars Spencer Bishop was hot  hitting 3 3s  in the first half finishing with 11pts and 3 assist.  Eli Buckner hit 2 leading all cougars with 15pts and 11 rebounds Eli also has 3 assist. Cougars up 17-4 after the first . Brandon brown hit a 3 early. Mitchell got back in the game in the second following a dunk by Mitchell's new transfer. Austin Taylor also had a dunk but was waved off for traveling( lame call). Taylor finished with only had 4pts  but 7 rebounds and 3 big blocks. Cougars up 33 -21 at the half  . Cougars then went to the north pole them self . Cougars were 17-53  from the floor with only 7 offensive rebounds . Mitchell went on a 8 -o run pulling to 39-35 at the end of the 3rd. Mitchell took they're first lead after Tim Hensley was called for a foul in the 4th on a 3 pt attempt Mitchell hit all 3 shots. Hensley fouled out finishing with 2 Pt's  2 rebounds 4 steals 3 great blocks 2 assist. Cougars went down 6 with under 20seconds when Lucas King hit a big 3 letting him finish with 5pts 2steals 1 assist 1 rebound. On the inbounds Cougars D caused a turn over with 11 seconds Spencer Bishop cleared out then passed to Alex Biggerstaff  for a 3 but was unable to connect.  Alex had 11 Pt's 6 rebounds 2 steals 4 assist on the night.

Lady cougars beat Mitchell at home earlier in the year. Cougars still with out Summer ray game was close in first . Brianna woody hit some shots inside she scored 12 Pt's , her 6 rebounds and 2blocks helped the cougars out to a 5 pt lead early. Maria Kardulis hussle gave her 10pts 4 rebounds 2 steals 2 assist with Destiny Elkins 8 rebounds put the cougars up 10 31-21 going into the half. Samm Chandler leads everyone again with 14 Pt's 15 rebounds a steal and 2 blocks.

 Cougar rebounding was the difference in the game. 
 Abby Baily had 3.Cougar up 11 after the third. Kaylon Johnson had 2 3s, Nyssa freeman had one Kaylon finished with 7 and 2 rebounds Freeman with six Pt's Freeman had 5 assist to lead team even had one block. Abby Renfro finished with 2 Pt's. Cougars win by 12 hitting they're foul shots at the end of the game
