HERITAGE VS MITCHELL WHC TITLE GAME

COUGARS BEATS MITCHELL
71-53

THE WESTERN HIGHLANDS TITLE GAME was between two old foes .Mitchell mountaineers and returning champions Mountain Heritage cougars . Its a lot like DUKE and CAROLINA......well maybe APP STATE and WESTERN CAROLINA ! Mitchell got to the game by beating Hendersonville in a thriller. Mountain Heritages hardest thing, was just getting on the bus from burnsville because they blowed out everyone they had played. This game would be the third meeting between these two this year ,Heritage winning the previous two games by double digits. But this game was called tight by the referees with everyone on both sides getting in foul trouble. The cougars John Cannon and Alex Biggerstaff started out slow so Tyson Tomberlin(Mr FOOTBALL) picked up the slack getting hot early getting the cougars out to a fast 7-2 lead and finishing with 9 Pt's . Before getting into foul trouble early himself . Drew Letterman was hot early with his quick passing and 10 Pt's with 2 threes, forced Mitchell to burn a time out early. Drew (THE KID) Hoilman (had 10) had a tough put back making the scoring 19-10. Cory Greene for Mitchell was hot pouring in 23pts to keep Mitchell close. But still trailed 34-24 at the half! Cougars had 15 team fouls in the first half with Alex Biggerstaff getting 3 early but in the second he played smart and effective finishing with 16 Pt's and hitting key foul shots down the stretch . Ben smith for Mitchell played a great hard nosed game for Mitchell getting 14pts but with referees calling everything on both sides fouled out early in the fourth. That allowed John (BOOM BOOM) Cannon a little breathing room to get in more of a groove scoring 15pts but have key rebounds and blocks when the game was close. Slowly the cougars started to pull away mainly because Mitchell could not hit there foul shots and Heritage could down the stretch. Cougars went 21-29 off the line ! Cougars went up 63-48 late with Matt Kardulis having 5pts . Cougars cruised after that out scoring Mitchell 21-15 in the fourth period. Winning the WESTERN HIGHLANDS CHAMPIONSHIP TOURNAMENT 71-53! JOHN CANNON WAS NAMED THE Tourney MVP ! DREW LETTERMAN and ALEX BIGGERSTAFF named ALL TOURNAMENT.

HERITAGE DFEATS MADISON
67-46

No one thought Madison would be in the 2nd round but........Madison they defeated Owen to get another shot vs Mountain Heritage. The Cougars had defeated them the previous 2 games this season . But this was not the same Madison girls team. Madison came out wanting to go to the championship round while the Lady Cougars came out cold. Madison went up fast 12-6 and it seemed like 100-0 . So when up get behind on the girls team what do you do? You put in (Big shot) Kayla Johnson a 3point happy shooter .Cougars down by 6 Johnson busted a NBA length three, getting the gym and the team back in it. Johnson finished with 7 points 5 rebounds. Sam Chandler lead the cougars with 12 points 11 rebounds and 4 steals. Madison's lead was slowly being chipped away . When Shepard who had 9 Pt's hit the go ahead shot from a perfect pass from Nyssa Freeman who had 5 Pt's and 2 steals. Cougars up 25-23 started shooting better behind Eric Witt's 7 points 5 rebounds also coming a live was Maria (ICE) Kardulis with 7pts and 7 rebounds . Put the cougars up by 34-27 at the half. It looked like Madison had just wore out. Summer Ray had 9 points 3 assists, the lady cougars pulled away in the second with Brenna woody coming alive with 12 points 5 blocks . WHC tourney round 2 Heritage vs Avery

HERITAGE DEFEATS AVERY 80-64

ROUND 2 OF THE WESTERN HIGHLANDS TOURNMENT

Avery had not beat Heritage this year being blowed out the previous two meetings. Avery's basketball team had depleted down to 8 players by the tourney. I would quit too if i knew i had to play Mountain Heritage again. What they missed, was what the scouts from the universities of Tcu, North Western and Georgia saw. Another beat down by the cougars. John (BOOM BOOM ) Cannon come out a little slower than usual and only really played a half in the game and still  had 20 points 10 boards and 2 monster blocks on Avery. The story of the night was "The Phenom" Alex BiggerStaff how was on fire all night . He could not be stopped inside or out . BiggerStaff had 34 points with 27 in the 1st half . When Alex hit his 5th three pointer.Thats when a recruiter from TCU turned around and said "WOW! Biggerstaff also had 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Biggerstaff only missed one shot on the night and only took 3 in the second half! Cougars were up 35-19 in a blink of an eye and up  51-25 at the half. Tyson Tomberlin had 6 points but his passing was off the charts getting 6 assists with 4 rebounds. Avery did cut the lead down to 15 at one point thanks to Dustin Clarke who had 27pts and Stewart's 13 Pt's. But Eli buckner (The Rambling Wreck) 7 Pt's and Spencer (The Priest) Bishop had 9 Pt's all three pointers keep Avery at a safe distance. Drew Letterman also had 4pts  with 8 assists. The cougars rolled with a 80-55 lead and did not look back with Matt Kardulis having 6 assists and 2 rebounds. All the Cougars put in good Min's in the 80-64 blow out of Avery. Heritage girls looked to rebound after losing in newland  last week , start of the game seemed like both teams was feeling the effects of a long season. With neither team shooting very well. Lady cougars as a team only shot 30 percent(13 for 44) . But Madison was as cold as an Ice berg as well. Cougars carried a one point lead on Madison through the first. COUGARS THUMP MADISON 104-58
Wrapping up another western highlands title . The cougars where no trying to run up the score but with so many weapons it was impossible not too. The reason the  score got out of control  and CANNONS blocks were down was because Madison refused to shoot inside against Heritage. Shooting quick 3s all night. Allowing senior TYSON TOMBERLIN to get fast put backs on the other end going 5-5 shooting 100% finishing with 10 points . Drew letterman went 100% from the floor but only took the first shot in the ball game. After that he dished the ball off getting 6 assists and also grabbing 4 rebounds. The scoring came from every direction  MATT KARDULIS had 6 pts with one awesome runner in the lane in the 1st also nabbing 2 steals and 3 rebounds.  Rounding out the starters was TRENTON BURLESON having 3pts getting 5 assists 1 steal two rebounds. building a 44-14 point lead. ELI BUCKNER was everywhere scoring 10 points also getting two steals.  With CANNON on the bench for the night "the kid" DREW HOILMAN showed what the future was going to look like scoring 10 and getting 12 rebounds.
Madison keep throwing up 3s with no ball work inside. That gives some one like SPENCER "the priest" Bishop a chance to pick you apart getting his 10 points hitting 2 threes. At 86-44 every body was looking for the cougars to get a 100. DALTON WOODY added to the cause hitting his second 3 of the night letting him finish with 8 points 5 rebounds 2 assists. ZANDER SILVERS did not try another dunk this game but he did  in the 2 previous games but he did have 5 Pt's with 3 rebounds .At the 1:24 remaining BIG 00 BRIAN KRAUSE got his bucket and the foul put the cougars at 98-50 .DREW "the kid" HOILMAN hit the century mark for the cougars.
